From a thematic point of view, my goal is to capture and record the unexpected and unseen beauty that hides in plain sight.
As much as my work is about the landscape as place, it is also about common threads of the collective of human emotions.
Every artist has a preferred medium for expression at a given moment. For me, it is pastel. Pastel can project the intensity of oils and acrylics, but also offers a more direct connection to the artist’s hand. Over the past five years, I’ve developed my abilities at coaxing different effects from these compressed sticks of pigment and binder.
As an artist with a healthy irreverence for the traditions of how pastels can be applied to surfaces, I’ve been excited about how chance and improvisation can play an important role in the formal realm of making art. Pastel is a medium that lends itself inexplicably to this exploration.
